Portal to the Cavern of the Maori Queen

Oil on canvas
(approx. 1200mm x 750mm)

This is a fantasy landscape based on many beautiful images I photographed in New Zealand.
I found the beauty of New Zealand to be overwhelming, magnificent in multitudinous ways. The blue shapes in the foreground are solidified molten lava on a beach in Gisbon, the tree ferns which are so prevalent in the forests had to be included. The rolling brown hills of the South Island like a giant wrinkled blanket become snow fields on the winter. The massive cliff face in the background is compacted volcanic ash. On either side inside the cavern we look out at the sky(mother of pearl shell) past cascading waterfalls, multi-coloured fungi and fire flies. I think of this painting as a mysterious feast for the eyes and imagination.
